How Does a Network Router Work?

Many households employ the use of routers.
Having this device in your home gives you many advantages and those are what you are going to find out today.
What Is A Network Router Anyway? A router basically allows you to connect to the computer and at the same time, allow you to communicate with your other computers.
This device is composed of Ethernet ports found at the back part and a separate WAN port for your wide area network.
You can use wires to connect to this or you can use wireless networks.
The wireless ones are more often used for people who have laptops at home so they can connect to the computer in all parts of the house.
How It Works Basically, you set your router first.
If you are using wired cables, you need to plug one end of your Ethernet cable to the back of the router.
Configure the settings using the disc that comes with the router.
For wireless connections, you need only to plug internet cable at the back of the router.
This will transmit internet signals to 100 feet proximity from the router.
For a wireless router to work for your computer, your computer has to be wireless ready.
This is no problem with laptops.
If yours was manufactured after 1999, it is definitely ready for a wireless connection.
Some desktop computers are not yet ready for a wireless connection.
There are two things you can do: you can either get a LAN cable and connect one end at the back of the router and one end at the Internet port at the back of your computer or get wireless card and install it on the mother board of your CPU.
It also allows your network to be more secure.
Most routers sold today have firewall functions that block many forms of intruders.
To make it more secure and to prevent other people who can detect signals from your router (like your neighbours perhaps), you should change administrator password including SSID name.
If you are using a wireless connection, you can connect many computers.
For the wired ones, there are 4 Ethernet ports so you can only connect up to 4 ports.
However, you can install external switches to create a bigger network.
Now that you know how this really works, you also probably realize how it can make connection more convenient.
To be able to have internet access anywhere in the house and to be able to communicate with your other computers is something your would not want to pass up.
