What are the job responsibilities of a pharmacist?

  • A pharmacist checks the prescription, its authentication as well as dispenses medicines accordingly. Also, a pharmacist must never misread the prescription as it leads to incorrect dispensation of medicine.
  • The job responsibility of pharmacists comprises that proper medicine is taken by the patient in defined dosage. Even if the dosage is written on the prescription note, it is the duty of a pharmacist to crosscheck whether or not patient knows about the pattern of consuming the medicine.
  • Also, pharmacists must check the expiry date of the medicine before handing it to the patient. The reactions on patients, taking expired medicines are detrimental and can lead to death also.
  • Often, patients, if receiving different treatments, are prescribed various medicines from different specialists. In some cases, the consumption of two medicines simultaneously has harsh reactions on the patient's overall health. The job of a pharmacist is to avert such dangerous reaction caused by drug interactions.
  • Advising patients is another facet of a pharmacist's job. A medicine bottle or sachet has relevant instructions to take medicine; nevertheless, it becomes beneficial for the patients if they receive a verbal instruction on how to take medicines, and pharmacists must do the same. The pharmacists should also let the patients know about the possible side effects to the medicine. Some patients are also advised by pharmacists on common health topics such as diet plans, tips for stress management and exercise regimens. 
  • Training of other pharmacist assistants is also one of the job responsibilities of a pharmacist. The pharmacist oversees that each of the assistants is dispensing the correct medicine or not.  Further, the pharmacist teaches several healthcare practitioners about complex medication therapies for patients.
  • A successful pharmacist should keep a finger on the dynamic pulse of the pharmaceutical sector and pharmacological science.

With the sudden rise in the elderly population as well as the progress of pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors, a pressing need is felt to have trained pharmacists in the market. As per researches, in 2020, nearly 157,000 pharmacists will be required. Presently, the active involvement of pharmacists in decision-making of drug therapy sessions has increased their job's scope.
